Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the Democratic presidential nomination, receiving enough delegates’ support for the ticket. The House Democratic Caucus chair, Ted Lieu, and vice-chair, Pete Aguilar, held a press conference praising her rise to the top. Harris officially became the presumptive nominee after securing more than 1,976 delegates. A virtual roll call vote in August at the Democratic National Convention will finalize her nomination. Aguilar highlighted the benefits of having Harris at the top of the ticket, stating it will be “incredibly helpful” for California Democrats. Four competitive House races in California could be affected by Harris’s nomination. The impact of a weak presidential nominee on battleground races was a concern that Rep. Adam Schiff expressed when urging Biden to step aside. Schiff and Lieu praised Biden for his selfless act and mentioned his effectiveness in his remaining six months in office. Lieu also compared Biden’s decision to George Washington’s voluntary retirement for the good of the country. He also criticized Donald Trump’s cognitive abilities and fitness for office, contrasting them with Biden’s. Trump, now the same age as Biden when he won the 2020 election, has defended his mental capabilities. The Democratic Party’s focus now shifts to rallying around Harris as the nominee for the upcoming presidential election.
