Realtors and landlords are the biggest spenders on California’s November ballot measures, with over $50 million donated so far for the 10 propositions. The most invested are in Proposition 33, which would expand local rent control, and Proposition 5, which would lower voting thresholds for local governments to borrow for housing and infrastructure. The California Association of Realtors and other groups have put millions into campaigns against these measures, while the AIDS Healthcare Foundation is supporting Prop. 33 with $16.7 million. Additionally, the battle extends to Prop. 34, which would restrict the foundation’s ability to contribute to ballot measures. While fundraising is still ongoing, contributions are unlimited, and there is a long way to go to reach the levels of spending seen in previous California ballot measure fights. Despite some measures being withdrawn or removed from the ballot, there is still plenty to be decided in the upcoming election. It’s never too early to get informed on the issues at stake, so make sure to read up on the ballot measures and the history of propositions in California.
