Trump’s first rally following assassination attempt features new running mate, Vance, at his side – Daily News

Former president Donald Trump held his first campaign rally in Michigan since surviving an assassination attempt a week prior. Trump, accompanied by newly named running mate Ohio Sen. JD Vance, addressed a crowd in Grand Rapids. The event was Trump’s return to his usual rally mode, where he insulted his Democratic rivals, repeated lies about the 2020 election, and joked with the audience.

The rally saw a significant police presence and tight security measures following the recent assassination attempt. Attendees had to pass through metal detectors, and bags were not allowed inside the venue. Despite the tense environment, Trump’s supporters showed up in full force, lining up for hours to attend the event.

Trump’s choice of Vance as his running mate was aimed at winning support from Rust Belt voters in crucial swing states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Democrats, who have dominated recent elections in Michigan, face division over whether President Joe Biden should drop out of the race.

Trump addressed the crowd, polling them on who they’d like to see as his opponent in the upcoming election. He criticized Democrats for attempting to replace Biden, calling it a “coup” and trying to distract from his own efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Following the rally, Biden’s campaign released a statement criticizing Trump’s divisive rhetoric and failed policies, accusing him of focusing only on himself. The 81-year-old Democratic incumbent is currently recovering from COVID-19 in Delaware, with growing calls for him to exit the race after a disastrous performance at a recent debate.
