California Democrats Urge President Joe Biden to Withdraw from Election
After a disappointing debate performance against former President Donald Trump in June, several California Democrats are calling on President Joe Biden to drop out of the November election. The pressure is coming from members of California’s congressional delegation, including close allies of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
On July 7th, news reports revealed that Rep. Mark Takano of Riverside was among four senior lawmakers who suggested Biden should withdraw. Other prominent Democrats in swing districts, including Reps. Scott Peters, Mike Levin, Adam Schiff, Jared Huffman, and Zoe Lofgren, have all voiced their concerns about Biden’s ability to win the election.
Former House Speaker Pelosi and Rep. Adam Schiff, who is running for U.S. Senate, have warned that Democrats could face a wipeout if Biden remains on the ticket. Pelosi recently advised Biden that he cannot win, while Schiff publicly stated that it is time for Biden to pass the torch and secure his legacy of leadership.
The pressure on Biden to withdraw comes as Democrats fear a landslide loss in the election that could also negatively impact House and Senate races. Despite having important allies in California, including Gov. Gavin Newsom, Biden is facing increasing calls from within his own party to step aside and allow for a different nominee.
As the debate within the Democratic Party continues, the future of Biden’s candidacy remains uncertain, with the clock ticking down to the November election.
