Disneyland’s largest union coalition, representing 14,000 employees, voted 99% in favor of authorizing a strike. The Disney Workers Rising Bargaining Committee stated that they are prepared to take action. While a strike date has not been set, negotiations between Disney and the unions are ongoing. The two sides are scheduled to meet on July 22 and 23 to discuss a new contract.
The union members, which include ride operators, store clerks, custodians, candy makers, ticket takers, and others, have been negotiating with Disney since April. The contract for approximately 9,000 Disneyland employees expired in June, while the contracts for Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney employees expire in September.
Despite the strike authorization vote, Disneyland remains open to visitors as negotiations continue. The Master Services Council, which declined to enter into a contract extension after the Disneyland contract expired, emphasized the importance of fair wages for its members. The union supporters rallied outside the theme park in Anaheim on July 17, with over 1,000 people chanting “Shut it down.”
While it is unlikely that a strike will occur while negotiations are ongoing, the possibility remains after the affirmative vote. Disneyland officials expressed their appreciation for their employees and their commitment to reaching an agreement that benefits both parties. The union coalition’s strike authorization is considered a standard part of the negotiation process, and further discussions are expected in the coming days.
