Disneyland Employees Vote to Approve Strike Action

Four unions representing over 14,000 workers at Disney’s theme parks in Southern California have voted to authorize a strike by an overwhelming 99%, citing alleged unfair labor practices during contract negotiations. The workers at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and Disney-owned hotels voted in favor of the strike authorization, but it does not mean a strike will happen immediately. The unions accused Disney of engaging in unfair labor practices, including unlawful discipline and intimidation of union members. The employees, known as cast members, entered contract negotiations with Disney in April, and filed unfair labor practice charges in June. The National Labor Relations Board is investigating these charges. Researchers have highlighted the economic struggles of Disneyland workers, with many facing food and housing insecurity. The unions stated that 64% of cast members are spending more than half of their paychecks on rent. Despite the strike authorization vote, negotiations are ongoing, with the Disney Workers Rising Bargaining Committee committed to returning to the bargaining table. The last strike at Disneyland occurred in 1984, lasting 22 days. The unions representing the workers include BCTGM Local 83, SEIU-USWW, Teamsters Local 495, and UFCW Local 324. The contract for cast members at Disneyland expired in June, while the contract for cast members at Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney expires in September.
