A tragic incident in China has left at least 11 people dead and dozens missing after a highway bridge collapsed in Shaanxi province amidst heavy storms and flooding. The collapse occurred in Shangluo city on Friday night, with victims recovered from vehicles that fell off the bridge due to a sudden downpour and flash floods. State media reported nearly 20 vehicles and over 30 people were missing, with rescue operations ongoing.
President Xi Jinping has called for all-out efforts to save lives and property as extreme weather wreaks havoc across northern and central China. Heavy rains have caused flooding and damage, with at least five people killed and eight missing in Baoji city, while Nanyang city in Henan saw an entire year’s rainfall in one week. Tragedies in Sichuan province have also occurred, with more deaths and missing individuals.
This latest disaster is part of a series of extreme weather events in China this summer, including heatwaves and deadly floods. In May, a highway collapse in Meizhou city claimed the lives of 48 people due to heavy rains. Authorities continue to work on rescue and relief efforts to address the aftermath of the recent bridge collapse and support those affected by the destructive weather conditions.
