U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited Humphreys Avenue Elementary School in East Los Angeles to announce a $10 million grant from the Biden/Harris administration for the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle crossing over the 710 Freeway. He was joined by L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis, Rep. Jimmy Gomez, and L.A. County Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins, as well as students from the school. The new crossing aims to make walking and biking to school safer for children and unite communities that have been divided by freeways. Gomez emphasized the trauma caused by freeways cutting through the area and highlighted the historical displacement of communities due to freeway construction. The Bipartisan Infrastructure law will fund this project, which is part of efforts to address transportation challenges and improve infrastructure. Buttigieg also addressed the media about his department handling problems caused by the Crowd Strike software glitch affecting travelers. The visit highlighted the importance of investing in infrastructure to support safer, more connected communities.
