A recent poll conducted by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that a majority of Democrats believe Vice President Kamala Harris would make a good president. Since President Joe Biden’s debate issues on June 27, speculation has grown among Democrats that Harris could be a stronger presidential candidate against GOP nominee Donald Trump. Despite this, Harris has remained loyal to Biden and defended him after the debate.
While overall Americans are more skeptical of Harris’ potential as president, Black adults view her more favorably. Democrats generally have a positive opinion of Harris, with about three-quarters holding a favorable view of her. Some Democrats feel that Harris would be better at mobilizing voters and representing the Democratic platform compared to Biden.
Harris is well-liked among Democrats for her stance on abortion and seen as a strong advocate for the issue. She is also more popular among Black Americans than white or Hispanic adults. Other potential Democratic candidates like Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer are less known to the public than Harris.
Despite Harris’s popularity among Democrats, some view her as a potential replacement for Biden due to concerns about his ability to defeat Trump. The poll also found that Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, is relatively unknown to most Americans.
The poll was conducted from July 11-15, 2024, with a sample drawn from NORC’s AmeriSpeak Panel and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
