Delaware 4-H is encouraging fairgoers to stay active at the Delaware State Fair with its third annual Get Walking challenge. The contest, created by extension agents Lindsey Hughes and Kaitlin Rogers, aims to see who can accumulate the most steps each day during the 10-day event.
Open to participants of all ages, the challenge has grown in popularity, with about 125 people taking part each year. Walkers registered before the fair began and were provided with a website to log their steps daily for a chance to win gift cards.
The Get Walking challenge aligns with Delaware 4-H’s Healthy Living Curriculum, promoting active lifestyles and hydration. Participants are encouraged to stay active during the fair, with different age divisions competing to see who can accumulate the most steps.
The original goal of the program was to walk across America and back, but participants have exceeded that target in recent years. The challenge has inspired fairgoers to be more active, with some participants starting their days with walks around the fairgrounds.
Overall, the Get Walking challenge serves as a fun way to promote healthy living and encourage fairgoers of all ages to stay active during the Delaware State Fair. By challenging participants to get more steps and stay hydrated, the program contributes to the mission of Delaware 4-H to promote healthy living among its members.
