Daily News: L.A. Airport Commission Schedules Completion Date for LAX People Mover

Los Angeles World Airports Commissioners have approved an additional $400 million to settle legal claims and set a completion date for LAX’s Automated People Mover project, bringing the total cost to $3.34 billion. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion and create union jobs in Los Angeles, with connections to the Metro system. The funding is needed to address claims from the contractor, LINXS.

The project is a priority for airport leadership and is set to be completed by December 2025, with operation starting in January 2026. The train system will be free for ticketed passengers, guests, and airport employees.

The People Mover is part of a larger $30 billion project to update LAX terminals and gates. Despite delays, it is expected to be operational in time for major events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is estimated to reduce vehicle miles traveled by 117,000 per day and carry 30 million passengers annually.

Councilmember Traci Park praised the project for reducing congestion and improving mobility around LAX. The train will operate 24/7, with trains arriving every two minutes during peak hours. It will have six stations, including connections to the Metro system, and a total end-to-end travel time of 10 minutes at a top speed of 47 miles per hour. The project has faced challenges, but officials are optimistic about its success in enhancing transportation options for residents, travelers, and businesses in the area.
