A recent poll from the Pew Research Center reveals that people in 34 countries have more confidence in President Joe Biden than his predecessor, Donald Trump. The survey found that a median of 43% of respondents trust Biden to do the right thing in world affairs, compared to only 28% for Trump. This greater confidence in Biden comes as faith in U.S. democracy is declining, with only 21% of respondents believing it sets a good example for other countries.
Despite global skepticism towards U.S. democracy, Biden received relatively high approval ratings for his handling of international crises, such as the Israel-Hamas war and the conflict in Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron ranked highest in global confidence, just ahead of Biden, while Russian President Vladimir Putin received the lowest ratings.
Interestingly, Trump’s confidence ratings were higher in only two countries – Hungary and Tunisia – but even there, they were not overwhelmingly positive. The former president’s lowest assessments were in Europe, with over 80% of adults in France, Germany, and Sweden expressing no confidence in him.
Overall, while global perceptions of U.S. democracy and political functioning are on the decline, Biden continues to receive higher confidence ratings than Trump among international audiences. This poll sheds light on the changing dynamics of global politics and the differing views on U.S. leadership.
