After a year of uncertainty and challenges, the group of Latin American migrants who were flown to Sacramento last year under false promises are slowly settling into their new lives in the U.S. Despite initial struggles and lack of resources from governments, community organizations and volunteers have stepped up to provide assistance in housing and support.
For many of these migrants, like Jorge Gil Laguna and his partner Olglaivis Barrios, receiving temporary protected status has provided a sense of stability and hope for the future. This legal permit allows them to work and stay in the country legally until 2025, giving them the opportunity to move out of the motel they are currently residing in and send money back to their families in Venezuela.
While most of the original 36 migrants from the group have left Sacramento due to various reasons, some, like Jose Castellanos and Margarita Yanez, have decided to stay. With the support of community organizations and volunteers like Shireen Miles and Gabby Trejo, these migrants have found temporary housing, jobs, and a sense of community in Sacramento.
Despite the uncertainty of their immigration cases and the challenges they continue to face, these migrants remain grateful for the opportunities they have been given in the U.S. and are determined to build a better future for themselves and their families. Their stories highlight the resilience and perseverance of immigrants seeking a better life in a new country.
