A legal battle over a Florida home painted to resemble Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night” has inspired a new documentary, “Starry Fight — A Canvas for the World.” The film tells the story of Nancy Nemhauser, who painted her home to help her son, Grant “Chip” Harrison, who has autism, find his way back home. The painting sparked a code violation controversy in 2018, with the city of Mount Dora aiming to fine the couple over $10,000. Attorney Jeremy Talcott fought for the couple and won, resulting in a public apology and the city paying their legal fees.
Director Lionel “Lee” Montells discovered the story and felt compelled to share it, highlighting the mother’s love for her son amid the legal battle. Despite the initial controversy, the painted house continues to attract visitors from around the world. Montells plans to complete filming later this year, with hopes of showcasing the documentary in film festivals and on streaming platforms.
Nemhauser hopes her story will inspire compassion and awareness for autism and the challenges parents face. She believes standing up for her son was worth it, as the painted house has brought joy to Chip and visitors alike. The documentary aims to celebrate this story of love and resilience, showing the impact of art, advocacy, and a mother’s unwavering dedication to her son.
