Newly elected UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has wasted no time in getting to work, declaring the ousted Tories’ plan to deport migrants to Rwanda “dead and buried”. He emphasized that growth is his government’s number one mission and vowed to do politics differently during his time in office. Starmer’s cabinet includes notable appointments, such as Britain’s first female finance minister Rachel Reeves and new foreign minister David Lammy.
The Prime Minister has already begun work on “driving growth” and has set high standards for his ministers. He has received congratulatory calls from world leaders, including US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Starmer’s support for NATO and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky remains unshakable.
The election saw a landslide victory for Labour, with the party winning 412 seats. The Conservatives suffered their worst-ever defeat, prompting Rishi Sunak to apologize and announce his resignation as Tory leader. The Liberal Democrats made significant gains, while the Scottish National Party saw a drastic decrease in seats. The Green Party also saw success, quadrupling their MPs count. Six independent lawmakers were elected, including those who defeated Labour candidates in districts with strong Muslim populations.
Looking ahead, Starmer faces challenges such as a struggling economy and divided party, but he remains determined to deliver concrete improvements to people’s lives. His debut on the international stage will be at a NATO summit in Washington next week, where he will reaffirm the UK’s commitment to security and defense.
