French residents living abroad start casting their votes in the second round of elections.

In Sunday’s legislative elections in mainland France, parties are vying for votes against a strong far-right force, with initial polling projections expected after the final voting stations close at 8 p.m. Paris time. The National Rally party, led by Marine Le Pen, came out on top in the first round of voting last Sunday, with President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance trailing behind. Overseas territories and French citizens living abroad began casting their ballots on Saturday in parliamentary run-off elections, with the nationalist far right potentially seeing an unprecedented victory. French citizens living abroad were also able to vote online earlier in the week. The National Rally, which blames immigration for many issues in France, hopes to secure an absolute majority in the second round, with the possibility of forming a government at odds with Macron’s policies. Despite pre-election polls suggesting the party may win the most seats in the National Assembly, it is unlikely to reach an absolute majority of 289 seats, potentially leading to a hung parliament. Macron has vowed to stay on as president until his term ends in 2027, but is expected to be weakened regardless of the election outcome. The results are expected to have significant implications for the future direction of French politics.
