The Los Angeles Dodgers received relatively good news on Friday morning regarding outfielder Jason Heyward’s knee injury. An MRI showed only a contusion similar to a hyperextension, with no damage to the meniscus or ligaments. Heyward injured his knee while attempting to rob a home run in Thursday’s game. He is expected to return in a couple of weeks after being placed on the injured list.
In the meantime, James Outman has been recalled to the big leagues to fill Heyward’s spot. Outman struggled earlier in the season with a low batting average but impressed in Triple-A with a .279 average, nine home runs, and 21 RBIs. Outman will likely share center field duties with Andy Pages while Heyward is out.
Additionally, Miguel Vargas may see more playing time in Heyward’s absence, with the possibility of him playing third base. Vargas has been playing left field but has shown success at the plate.
The Dodgers will also promote left-hander Justin Wrobelski to make his major league debut on Sunday. Wrobelski, a fast-rising prospect, has impressed in the minors and will provide pitching depth for the Dodgers.
With relievers covering a significant number of innings in recent games, the Dodgers made changes to their bullpen on Friday. Left-hander Nick Ramirez was sent to Triple-A and right-hander Gus Varland was recalled.
The Dodgers will face the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, with Freddy Peralta pitching for the Brewers and James Paxton for the Dodgers. The game will be broadcast on FOX and 570 AM.
