Monterey Park and Bassett will be conducting pesticide spraying in select areas to combat an increase in the mosquito population, which could lead to a higher risk of illnesses such as West Nile virus. The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District will be spraying from a truck moving through the affected areas between midnight and 5 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
In Monterey Park, spraying will target an area between West Floral Drive and the Pomona Freeway, while in Bassett, it will be focused on the area between Puente and Vineland avenues. The pesticide, Aquaduet, is mixed with water and is designed to attract mosquitoes by mimicking chrysanthemum flowers.
The goal of the spraying is to decrease mosquito populations, interrupt virus transmission, and protect residents from mosquito-borne diseases, according to SGVMVCD Director of Scientific Program Tristan Hallum. Residents are encouraged to eliminate standing water, maintain swimming pools and spas, change pet dish and bird bath water regularly, and report neglected swimming pools to help reduce mosquito populations.
More information about the operation is available on the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District’s website. The pesticide used in the spraying will not harm finishes on cars or homes. By working together to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes, residents can help reduce the risk of illnesses such as West Nile virus in their communities.
