Creators of Deepfake videos are profiting from selling nonconsensual videos on underground websites

Despite credit card companies like Visa and Mastercard stating that transactions for fake sexually explicit deepfake videos of celebrities are not allowed, websites like Fan-Topia continue to offer this content and accept payments through these credit cards. Deepfakes, which involve digitally altering videos using AI tools to create misleading content, mostly target women in nonconsensual sexually explicit material. The use of “hidden links” on Fan-Topia allows creators to sell this content while keeping it hidden from public view.

Some of the top creators on MrDeepFakes, a popular free streaming website for deepfakes, promote hidden links to Fan-Topia where users can purchase longer versions of the content. The creators target a variety of women, including celebrities and political figures like Ivanka Trump. The “hidemylink” service acts as a paywall, allowing creators to charge subscribers for access to their content. Despite Visa and Mastercard’s prohibition of using their products for this type of content, they have not taken action against Fan-Topia.

The development of “hidemylink” has allowed deepfake creators to continue operating despite increased scrutiny and criminalization of deepfake creation in some countries like the UK. While there have been efforts to introduce legislation in the US to penalize nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes, it has not yet been passed. Deepfake creators see these measures as potentially driving their content into darker corners of the internet. Overall, the use of hidden links and paywalls has enabled the distribution of fake sexually explicit content of celebrities to persist, despite efforts to restrict it.
