Archbishop Vigano, papal arch enemy, convicted of schism and excommunicated

Italian Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, a strong critic of Pope Francis, has been found guilty of schism and excommunicated by the Vatican’s doctrinal office. In 2018, Vigano went into hiding after accusing the pope of ignoring sexual misconduct allegations against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. He called for the pope’s resignation and labeled him a “false prophet” and a “servant of Satan”. The Vatican rejected Vigano’s allegations and summoned him to answer charges of schism and denying the pope’s legitimacy.

The doctrinal office stated that Vigano’s refusal to acknowledge and submit to Pope Francis, as well as rejecting the Second Vatican Council’s reforms, led to his guilt of schism and subsequent excommunication. Vigano, in response, remained unrepentant and urged Catholic faithful to support him. He cited Jesus’ words from the New Testament, warning that “the stones themselves will start shouting” if they remained silent.

Vigano accused Pope Francis of leading a Church that is too inclusive, pro-immigration, eco-friendly, and supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, straying from its core message. The pope’s efforts towards mercy, forgiveness, migrant rights, combatting climate change, and criticizing capitalism have caused tension with conservatives and traditionalists.

This incident follows a similar situation in which Pope Francis dismissed Bishop Joseph E. Strickland from Tyler, Texas, after he refused to step down following a Vatican investigation. In both cases, the pope faced opposition from arch-conservative critics within the Catholic Church.
