Vatican exiles archbishop who called Pope Francis ‘minion of the devil’ | Global News

Carlo Maria Vigano, an ultra-conservative archbishop, has been excommunicated by the Vatican after being found guilty of schism, one of the gravest crimes in canon law. Vigano, who previously served as the Vatican’s ambassador to the US, went into hiding in 2018 after making allegations against Pope Francis regarding sexual misconduct by a US cardinal. He also criticized the Pope and called for his resignation, leading to his excommunication. This banishment means that Vigano is now formally outside the church and cannot celebrate or receive its sacraments.

The Vatican’s doctrinal office announced the excommunication, stating that Vigano refused to recognize and submit to the head of the Roman Catholic Church. Vigano had also rejected the liberal reforms made by the church in the 1960s. Despite the banishment, Vigano remains unrepentant and continues to post on social media, urging Catholics to support him.

Vigano has built a following of ultra-conservatives over the years by delving into conspiracy theories and criticizing the Catholic Church’s efforts to modernize. In recent posts, he has labeled the coronavirus pandemic as the “Great Reset” and accused Pope Francis of representing an “inclusive, immigrationist, eco-sustainable, and gay-friendly” church. The excommunication of Vigano by the Vatican highlights the ongoing tensions within the Catholic Church and the strong beliefs held by individuals like Vigano.
