Ocean and In-River Salmon Sport Fisheries in California Closed for Second Year in a Row, CDFW News

The California Fish and Game Commission has voted to close in-river salmon sport fishing in the Klamath River Basin and Central Valley rivers for the second consecutive year. The decision was made in an effort to manage low salmon abundance and align with federal closures of ocean salmon seasons off the California coast. The closures are expected to take effect by July 1, 2024.

In addition to the fishing closures, the Commission also approved measures to address chronic wasting disease in California deer and elk herds. Changes to regulations governing the importation of cervids and disease testing requirements were made to meet current U.S. Department of Agriculture standards.

The Commission also approved regulation changes for issuing special hunt permits and drawings, allowing for a more fair and equitable distribution of available permits through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Automated License Data System.

The decision to close recreational and in-river salmon sport fisheries reflects the ongoing need for conservation efforts in California’s waterways. Future Commission meetings will continue to address important wildlife management and conservation issues, with the next meeting scheduled for June 19-20, 2024 in Mammoth Lakes.
