Epic Games Store accepted by Apple for EU after company’s public demand

Epic Games complained publicly that Apple repeatedly rejected their application for the Epic Games Store in the European Union, citing violations of E.U. law. The tech giant had rejected the submission twice, stating that the design and labels used were too similar to Apple’s own App Store. Despite the complaints, Apple eventually accepted the submission. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney expressed relief that development could continue, although he mentioned delays with Apple’s TestFlight program.

The Epic Games Store is a platform where consumers can buy various games, including Fortnite. The company stated that using buttons labeled “Install” and “In-app purchases” is standard in the industry, and accused Apple of being arbitrary and obstructive. The back-and-forth between Epic Games and Apple garnered significant attention online, with many criticizing Apple’s actions and expressing relief when the submission was finally accepted.

Apple confirmed that the Epic Sweden AB Marketplace app has been approved, but requested that Epic Games make its Marketplace less similar to the Apple App Store in the future. A representative of Apple also mentioned ongoing concerns about the company’s compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. Epic Games has been involved in a long-standing dispute with app store companies like Apple over revenue sharing practices and lack of independence for app developers. In response to these concerns, the E.U. commission announced an investigation into Apple’s practices regarding the Apple App Store.
