During a Fourth of July celebration at Corlears Hook Park in Manhattan, a pickup truck driven by a suspected intoxicated driver crashed into a crowd, killing three people and injuring seven others. The park was full of families enjoying the holiday when the tragedy occurred. Two of the victims were in critical condition, three were in serious condition, and three were not seriously hurt. Mayor Eric Adams and Police Chief Jeff Maddrey stated that the driver appeared to be under the influence, but further tests were needed to confirm. First responders found the truck on top of four victims and were able to detain the driver until authorities arrived. The driver was speeding on Water Street and went through an intersection before crashing into the park. The incident is under investigation, and the driver’s identity has not been released. The community was left shocked and saddened by the senseless act of violence during what should have been a joyous celebration.
