39 people fall ill after gas leak at Malaysia’s main international airport

A gas leak at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia has left 39 people feeling ill, according to authorities. The leak was traced to an abandoned skid tank at an aircraft engineering facility located separate from the passenger terminal. The victims experienced symptoms such as dizziness and nausea, with 14 being treated at the air disaster unit and one being hospitalized. All of those affected work for three companies operating at the facility. Thankfully, the incident did not disrupt passengers or flights and there was no wider risk to public safety. Authorities identified the leaked gas as methyl mercaptan, which is added to liquefied petroleum gas to give it a distinct smell similar to rotten cabbages. Emergency crews were working to cover the leak to prevent further issues. The police stated that the skid tank had been left unattended for nine years, leading to the leak. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper maintenance and monitoring of equipment to ensure the safety of workers and the public.
